My thoughts on Tropical Storm Harvey

August 29, 2017

My thoughts are with everyone suffering in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Harvey. I have a few friends in Houston, and they say it’s the worst flooding they’ve ever seen. I heard on the news that the damage is estimated at around $35 billion at this point. I think this is a reminder of the high cost, both human and economic, of extreme weather fueled by climate change. I’m not saying that hurricanes and other extreme weather won’t happen if we address climate change, but they will only intensify further, as they already have been for years if we don’t address climate change. I was offended by Trump’s superficial gesture of going to Texas when he has been a climate change denier and pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord. His pick for the Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, is a man who wants to dismantle the agency designed to make sure we all have access to clean air and water. I chose the “As Above So Below” piece because it’s a reminder that what we do to the air, comes back to us on the ground. Climate change is real and at times really destructive…if we fail to act to reverse it, the consequences will be on all of our consciences. I’ll continue to make art and donations to organizations that fight climate change such as the NRDC and 350.org. – Shepard
