NØISE began in 2013 when my friend John Goff suggested that we work on some original music together. We made some instrumental compositions and then serendipitously met Merritt Lear and her former bandmate Joe Cassidy. Merritt added incredible vocals and melody ideas, and Joe added guitar and production/arrangement. We completed two songs, decided to name our project NØISE, and rushed to produce a limited edition of 500 7-inch records for release at my 50 Shades of Black art show in the spring of 2014. The NØISE “Little Lions” 7-inch first pressing sold out quickly and has been out of print for seven years. In 2017 we released a pressing of 1,000 of the NØISE “State Violence State Control” 7-inch, which featured covers of two songs that represent our band’s resistance to the attitudes and policies of the Trump administration. We maintained the spirit of Discharge’s song “State Violence State Control” and Bob Marley’s song “Get Up Stand Up” but also reinterpreted the songs through our own stylistic sensibility. The original pressing of “State Violence State Control” also sold out immediately and has not been available for close to four years. We (NØISE) decided after frequent requests to re-press both 7-inch records with new variations on the art and remastering by Hans Dekline. The sonic quality is incredible on the new pressings, which made us all feel great about releasing the second pressing of 1,000 of the “Little Lions” 7-inch and 500 of the “State Violence State Control” 7-inch. Tragically right as we were about to release these records, Joe Cassidy passed away from complications from pneumonia that turned septic. Like many self-employed people, Joe did not have health insurance and was hesitant to go to the doctor and face high medical bills. I’m crushed that Joe died the way he did, and I hope we’ll all consider supporting every effort to make affordable healthcare a reality for everyone. We miss Joe as a friend and collaborator, but his talent lives on in the music he left behind with NØISE and many other great music projects he worked on. Rest In Power Joe!
