Madison Marquette, a leading investor, developer and operator of retail and mixed use real estate throughout the United States and owner of LaBrea, started the adaptive reuse development two years ago after purchasing eleven buildings on S. LaBrea Avenue between 1st and 2nd Street. The vision for LaBrea is to create a destination of retail, restaurants, galleries and creative offices that blend well with the existing neighborhood and become a true urban District.
Upon the completion of the second phase of LaBrea earlier this year, Madison Marquette teamed up with Merry Karnowsky of MK2 Projects to create this lasting art installation on the side of the historic Continental Graphics Buildings.
“This mural fits the vision of LaBrea beautifully. It reflects the artistic and creative landscape of this historic neighborhood and we are honored to display the work of such a renowned artist throughout the next year and as we complete the redevelopment ,” said Brandton Leitze, General Manager for LaBrea.
Karnowsky, who has worked with Fairy in the past added “I’ve known Shepard for a long time and in addition to having ideas that awe and inspire at a scale this large, he is also someone who cares about this community and who supports what we are trying to create here.” MK2 Projects’ focus is to give artists opportunities to complete projects in the spirit of collaboration and that inspire other artists and people in the community.
To celebrate the completion of the mural, LaBrea is hosting a 2 week group art exhibition that will open on Friday November 11.The exhibition will feature original artwork by Shepard Fairey and several other artists who have worked in some capacity on public projects as part of their artistic journey and who embrace the idea of collaboration with other types of artists, designers and musicians. The Group Exhibition will run from Friday, November 11 through Saturday, November 26, 2011 at MK2 Projects within LaBrea, at 161 S. La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles CA 90036.

About La Brea
“La Brea”, is an adaptive re-use development project on La Brea Avenue between 1st and 2nd in Los Angeles, CA and includes a 125 space parking garage; which can be accessed through the alley off of 2nd Street between La Brea and Detroit.. The Project features eleven buildings being transformed to host a complementary mix of retail, dining and creative offices. Formerly the site of an Edsel Automobile dealership in the 1950’s, the building was later headquarters to one of LA’s premier printing shops, Continental Graphics Corporation. Each building’s unique characteristics, including wood truss ceilings, exposed brick and steel beams, are being highlighted. Madison Marquette is inviting an eclectic mix of emerging regional and local retail and dining brands to put down roots, carefully curating the La Brea experience to build on the area history. Today the neighborhood hosts an eclectic mix of showrooms, galleries and retailers with long histories on La Brea Avenue including American Rag, Undefeated, La Brea Bakery and Pink’s.
