MoveOn.org x RepubliCorp

October 27, 2010

Please check out this great video by a MoveOn.org and Olivia Wilde, both of whom I have collaborated with on multiple occasions. Now that the Citizen’s United Supreme Court decision allowing anonymous campaign contributions by corporations has taken effect, the political playing field has been tilted even more in favor of corporate interests. The Democrats are certainly not guilt free when it comes to pandering to corporate interests, but when you look at which party usually brazenly serves corporate interests, it is no surprise that record money is being spent on Republican campaigns for the 2010 mid-term elections. In my opinion, campaign finance reform should be a top priority, check out fixcongressfirst.org… but don’t forget to vote in the mid-term elections Nov. 2. There is a lot at stake. Thanks for caring.

Hollywood Actors Warn of Republican/Corporate Merger in New GOTV Video

MoveOn has released a new, technologically innovative Get-Out-the-Vote video titled “RepubliCorp.” The video is intended to remind voters that with the stakes as high as they are in this election, every single vote counts. The video also uses the Facebook Connect technology to take personalization to a new level by using pictures and weaving the user’s friends into the story line. Also, for the first time ever, the personalization has been extended to the audio track, allowing the characters to literally call the user’s name out.

The video, which can be customized and sent to your friends, features actress Olivia Wilde (TRON: Legacy, The Next Three Days and House, M.D.) and actor Romany Malco (40 Year Old Virgin and Weeds), as rebel fighters living in the year 2057. They are fighting “RepubliCorp,” a merger of the Republican Party and big corporations that is currently ruling the world. The theme is that the individual receiving the video did not vote, thus throwing the election to the Republicans and allowing the creation of RepubliCorp. The video uses shock and humor to deliver an important GOTV message.

MoveOn sent out the email to their 5 million members today.

“If Americans don’t want their country turned into RepubliCorp, they need to vote,” said Olivia Wilde. “Since the Supreme Court has decided to allow corporations to buy elections, we felt a life-like, reality-based video from the future is exactly what progressives need to realize how much is at stake November 2nd.”

“People on the fence are primarily motivated to vote because their friends urge them to,” said Justin Ruben, Executive Director of MoveOn.org. “This video allows our members to remind their networks exactly what’s at stake in this election in a fun and eye catching way. Olivia is literally calling you to vote.”

The video is the latest to build on studies showing individuals are more likely to vote when they receive a personal appeal from someone they know.
