“Art is a Hammer” Mural in Moscow, Russia

September 21, 2018

My Artrium mural, “Art is a Hammer” is a tribute to the Russian Constructivist art style that is probably my biggest art and design influence, especially from the mid 90’s to early 2000’s. The mural includes a portrait of Vladimir Mayakovsky, a Russian poet, actor, and designer. He was a prominent figure in the Futurist movement and one of the signers of the Futurist manifesto. The art includes the phrase “art is not a mirror to reflect society but a hammer with which to shape it”, originally coined by Bertoit Brecht, but frequently used by Mayakovsky. I agree with the message of that phrase and the mural also features an update of the Obey Hammer art I made in the late 90’s. Artrium also has amazing murals by Faust, Ben Eine, WK Interact, Faith 47, Tristan Eaton, Felipe Pantone, and others. Check it out if you are in #Moscow!
