Subliminal Projects is pleased to present New Bohemia Signs: East on Sunset. New Bohemia Signs (NBS) is a shop in San Francisco that has employed a collective of designers, artists, and sign makers to produce exclusively hand painted and gilded signs since 1992. For this exhibition, members of NBS spent time on the Eastern edge of Sunset Boulevard that runs through Silverlake, Echo Park and into Downtown Los Angeles. They absorbed the visual layers of the neighborhood, local businesses and street signs to gain an understanding of the personalities that work, play and define this particular area of Los Angeles.
RECEPTION DATES:
Friday, December 7 • 8 PM – 11 PM
EXHIBITION DATES:
December 8 – January 12, 2013
These neighborhoods have undergone a series of facelifts over the past couple of years, resulting in an evolving demographic that continues to transform the local lifestyle and visual landscape. Remnants of the past peak out from under new establishments, often in the form of old signage or decaying buildings sprinkled amongst revived venues.
Immediate impressions of this stretch on Sunset were translated by NBS into a smart and playful exhibition of unique hand painted signs and installations. Exhibited artists include Aaron Cruse, Ken Davis, Caitlyn Galloway, Heather Hardison, Corinne Matesich, Candice Obayashi, Damon Styer, and Scott Thiessen.
The gallery store at Subliminal Projects will also feature sign-inspired objects by Rhode Island based designer Boris Bally. Bally transforms recycled street signs, weapon parts, and found material into tableware, furniture and flatware designed for everyday use. He has recently collaborated with OBEY to offer limited edition Andre icon items that will be for sale exclusively in the gallery store.
The opening reception for New Bohemia Signs: East on Sunset will take place on Friday, December 7th and the show will be on view through January 12th, 2013. Please visit www.newbohemiasigns.com and www.borisbally.com to learn more about the featured artists.
