Nelson Mandela is one of my heroes, and his message of racial equality, unique courage, and example of moral leadership is all needed now more than ever. So when my friend Jesse Stagg asked me to do my first mural in Africa back in 2014, I didn’t hesitate. Painting the huge mural in downtown Johannesburg was an inspiring experience for me, and I was buoyed by the amazing spirit of the people of South Africa, “The Rainbow Nation.”
As we celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day, we’re looking back on the print edition of the mural that I was honored to create, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and in support of all of Mandela’s Legacy organizations, as they pursue his vision of One Humanity, Equal and Free.
