Subliminal Projects is honored to present Less is More, an important group exhibition of minimalist works by artists Clytie Alexander, Edith Baumann, Larry Bell, Scot Heywood, Jow, Sol LeWitt, Bertil Petersson, Anthony Sneed, and Samuel Stabler. In celebration of the Getty Initiative, “Pacific Standard Time”, this exhibition focuses on fundamental features that are explored by these already established and emerging artists’ works from the early 1970’s to today. Less is More is on view October 15 through November 5, 2011 and a reception for the artists will be held Saturday, October 15th, from 7-10 p.m.

Edith Baumann, Jazz Notes #73, 2011, raw pigment acrylic on canvas (grey/green/black), 60 x 60 inches

Minimalism’s features include geometric, often cubic forms purged of much metaphor, equality of parts, repetition, neutral surfaces, and industrial materials. Because of a tendency in Minimalism to exclude the pictorial, illusionistic and fictive in favor of the literal, these reductive works are concerned with questions of shape, size, relative position of figures, and the properties of space.

Ad Reinhardt had this to say about the value of a reductive approach to art: “The more stuff in it, the busier the work of art, the worse it is. More is less. Less is more. The eye is a menace to clear sight. The laying bare of oneself is obscene. Art begins with the getting rid of nature.”
