My “Power to the People” futsal court design combines several slogans I embrace philosophically within a geometric composition that also highlights Black and Latino cultural figures with a strong cultural connection to Oakland and the Bay Area. Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panther Party, was born and raised in Oakland, and along with Panther co-founder Huey P. Newton, proliferated the slogan “All Power to the People” as part of the Black power movement’s communications. Artist Frida Kahlo spent a great deal of time in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, Diego Rivera, during the 1930s and 40s, fostering a strong cultural exchange between Mexico and the Bay Area. As a feminist, Frida also represents a positive step toward greater empowerment and equality for women in the arts, even though much more progress is still needed. The patterns and flowers in the design symbolize harmony and possibility. -Shepard
