Subliminal Projects Gallery is pleased to present Pattern Recognition, a group exhibition of works by Seonna Hong, Nikki McClure, Richard Colman, Dalek, and Souther Salazar on view November 6, through December 4, 2010.
A pattern is a type of theme consisting of recurring events or objects that repeat in a predictable manner. Each artist’s work in this show is a direct example of visual pattern, whether they be simple and decorative, such as stripes, zigzags, and polka-dots, or more complicated patterns, which may be found anywhere in nature and in art, they can be directly observed with any of our five senses. Shapes, sounds, tastes, smells, and textures all go into the creation of higher order structures which are vital to our growth and adaptation to the environment.
There is more to pattern than just the literal aspect, however. The observation of rituals, habits, coping mechanisms, and our reactions to things, events and people, are based on data that we’ve accrued and will therefore lead to the ability to recognize a given sub pattern within a much larger pattern. Through the artist’s observation, “Art is the imposing of a pattern on experience, and the aesthetic enjoyment is recognition of the pattern.” Pattern recognition is also the ability to see order in a chaotic environment; the primary condition for life… particularly the idea that even in chaos, there are recognizable patterns.
Seonna Hong is a Los Angeles based artist, active in both the fine art and animation communities. Her paintings have appeared in exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, the Pacific Northwest, and Tokyo, Japan.
Nikki McClure of Olympia, Washington is known for her painstakingly intricate and beautiful paper cuts. She is a self-taught artist who has been making paper-cuts since 1996.
Richard Colman has exhibited his electric-hued paintings and illustrations throughout the world in solo and group exhibitions. He currently lives and works in San Francisco, California.
Dalek is an artist and designer based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Two books have been published of his artwork, and his art has appeared on a wide variety of mediums, including sneakers, sculptures and a Scion car.
Souther Salazar is a Californian based mixed media artist whose installations encourage exploration and participation by the viewer. His work has been exhibited in many galleries and Museums.
