THIS SATURDAY, Nov. 22nd there is a rally at Hollywood and Highland to overturn Prop 8. The rally starts at 2pm. Anyone who believes in equality and human dignity should be appalled that Prop. 8 passed. Here is a link to a great Keith Olbermann special commentary on the issue and I could not agree more with him.

SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is pleased to announce Letters and Ligatures, the exhibition that delves into the alphabetical world of the Delaware-based House Industries. The irreverently type foundry proudly showcases a collection of prints, patterns, installations, and sculpture based on their recent typographical explorations.

For Letters and Ligatures, House Industries conveys a single, yet complex philosophy: visual nomenclature fuels language, facilitates communication, and forms the basis of a civilized society. The written language strings together letters, words, and sentences, conveying the innermost thoughts a nd ideas that human beings communicate to the outside world. It is tied to our primitive nature, governing our individual choices and observations, our collective socio-anthropologic history. At House Industries, the dedicated collective of artists figure if these symbols of syntax hold such an authority, “they might as well look good.”

Drawing upon House Industries’ fifteen-year excursion into the world of scripts and symbols, the works in Letters and Ligatures detail the imaginative fonts and designs that marry the type with the thought. “Without standardized lexigraphy, we could not create the essence of truth, allowing history to pass on the tongues of those who change it to suit their needs.” House Industries understands that each design requires a commitment of time, energy, and creativity. With each project, the bond between artist and font is deepened. The two work closely together, first coming to an understanding of the project’s origins and meaning, then translating that abstraction into something that compliments but does not distract from the main idea. In essence, House Industries’ Letters and Ligatures aims to invite us to share in that close bond and is proof of House’s instrumental role as innovators and directors in the multifaceted communications of our society.

On Monday 11/17 we will be releasing the 3rd collaboration with legendary photographer Al Rockoff. This print is entitled Duality of Humanity 4 and is, of course, part of the DOH Series. The print is an edition of 450 and will be $50.

For those of you who are interested in seeing more of Al’s work. We are happy to announce an exhibition he will be opening this Saturday at the Composition Gallery in Atlanta, GA. Legendary photojournalist Al Rockoff has spent the bulk of his working life documenting war and the aftermath of war in Southeast Asia. He spent several years as a combat photographer, covering what he calls “The American War” in Vietnam. Then, from 1973 to 1975, Rockoff worked as a freelance photographer in Cambodia and was one of the few journalists who remained to capture the fall of Phnom Penh and the brutality of the Khmer Rouge.

“I shed blood for my art”, says Rockoff, whose passion for truthful combat photography left him wounded nine times. His stunning photographs have been published in numerous newspapers and magazines, including Newsweek and the New York Times, and he was portrayed, albeit inaccurately, by John Malkovich in the Academy Award winning film The Killing Fields.

Mr. Rockoff continues to return to Cambodia, adding to his inventory of images for an upcoming book. By chronicling the country’s emergence from the war, and its post-Khmer Rouge reconstruction, he hopes to correct the misconceptions that exist regarding its destruction. “The blood debt that America owes Cambodia is a big one” Rockoff says of the American invasion and its aftermath.

Recently, Rockoff has collaborated with renowned illustrator and graphic artist Shepard Fairey to create a series of prints based on several of his photographs. This project has been immediately successful and the first two prints have completely sold out. Shepard feels that these images draw parallels between the complex emotions surrounding the Vietnam War and those felt now about the invasion of Iraq. “Al Rockoff’s photos reveal the brutality, but also the conflicted humanity seen in war. The risks Rockoff took to capture his images were often as great as the risks of the subjects he wished to document. I am honored to be able to work with Al Rockoff”.

I first moved to California in 1996 to work with my friend and art and skateboarding role model Andy Howell. If you don’t know who he is, Andy founded New Deal Skateboards, Underworld Element (now Element), and Sophisto Clothing. Now Andy has started artsprojekt.com and is re-issuing some classic skate art, along with some new boards. We are re-releasing some Obey classics, and have added some new boards into the mix. Enjoy.
